Iron Hand Mom from TAIWAN

Known in Mandarin as “Iron-Hand Mom”, she is a part-time macramé weaving artist and a mom of 5 children. Some of her renowned works include macramé earrings, bags, and hanging décor for plants, consisting of intricate tribal and floral patterns with strong elements of mother nature. She represents the Paiwan indigenous tribe living in the mountains of Pingtung, south of Taiwan.

Macramé is a craft skill requiring the tying of different types of knots. Depending on the angles and thickness of the knots, different geometrical shapes can be made into intricate patterns as the shape grows. It was said the sailors from Europe spread the art to East Asia in near modern days, while the oldest form of Macramé came from Middle East during the Babylonian and Mesopotamian era, and remain a popular for of craft in Arabic countries. Although macramé product ranges from apparel to towels, in today’s fast fashion industry, the skill had proven more profitable in producing household items like bracelets, and wall decoration. Each piece might take months to finish, depending on the size and details of of the design.
