HAND-WOVEN IN TAIWAN
Handmade emerald on ten yen Japanese Meiji coin or silver teardrop filigree, with green wax thread macramé tassel earring. “Me’aca” means Growth in Pinayuanan, one branch of the Austronesian languages spoken by the Paiwan Indigenous tribe from the island of Taiwan.
Taiwan had been colonized by Imperial Japan from the the year 1895-1945 (Japan Meiji and Showa era), many aboriginal tribes had faced violent discriminations, and were force to speak Japanese and assimilate. Today, the remnant of this part of history can be found in many artworks and family cultures.
ARTIST
Known in Mandarin as “Iron-Hand Mom”, she is a part-time macramé weaving artist and a mom of 5 children. Some of her renowned works include macramé earrings, bags, and hanging décor, consisting of intricate tribal and floral patterns with strong elements of mother nature. She represents the Paiwan indigenous tribe living in the mountains of Pingtung, south of Taiwan.
