HAND-WOVEN IN KASHMIR
Handmade silk shawl with reversible Boteh (Paisley) pattern, with double sided color thread of brown, copper, blue, and white.
“Kashmir” is the name of the town where the popular patterned shawl was originated around 15th Century. The town was where hand twill tapestry weaving technique was invented to weave complex patterns. In 17th Century, Kashmir shawls spread to Europe, and the “Boteh” patterns became known as “Paisley”, the name of a town in Scotland where Kashmir shawls were replicated with machine looms to cut down the time of handweaving.

Kashmir Valley is historically known as “Heaven on Earth”, and pride itself in its wool weaving skills since ancient times. Kashmir Valley preserved many traditions with generations of skilled artisans trying to pass down these dying artform in today’s world. This is especially apparent in time-consuming handcraft such as hand woven products like the hand knotting Persian rug, hand loom shawls, Kashmiri hook work, and needle work embroideries. Many of these hand crafted art takes months to a year to be created, and were traditionally passed down as heirlooms from mothers to daughters. While most of theses handcrafted designs are inspired from the animals and natures found in their beautiful homeland.
