Handmade job’s tears seeds rustic bronze triangle earring. “Lumay” means Grain in Pinuyumayan, a branch of the Austronesian languages spoken by the Puyuma Indigenous tribe from the island of Taiwan.

For 6 thousand years, Taiwan indigenous people had coexist with nature on the small island. Job’s tears, also known as Chinese pearl barley or adley millet, was traditionally grounded into powder to be used as medicine or food by the indigenous people. Tribal witches also make it into bells and accessories to scare away evil spirits. Today, the grain is a common food throughout South and East Asia, and the seeds are made into prayer beads or rosaries, with very much the same old belief!

ARTIST

Known as “Summeryala”, the Puyuma artist makes macramé weaving and sewing art inspired from her tribal roots. Her marriage with a Paiwan tribe partner inspired her to combine different ethnic artforms in her work, including Taiwan’s hippie and reggae culture style. Summeryala brand is all about creating innovation, and design freely without repeat the same design twice. She represents the Katratripulr Puyuma tribe living in Taitung city, located along the southeast coast of Taiwan.
